Kamchatka. 10-day Ski-tour. Igloo-hotel. 2016 – from 1495 EUR€

We will make this ski tour in two wonderful places of Kamchatka, Paratunka river valley and on Avachinsky group of volcanoes. The Program consists of a short radial trips from two base camps of both areas. The zest of the first half of our tour is Viluchinsky volcano, the classic strato volcano, 2173 m high. Reaching the summit it’s possible to ski on different slopes, choosing the best snow condition. And of course after each day of skiing we soak our weary but happy feet in the geothermal bathes.

The second part of the tour will be ended by Avachinsky volcano climbing. Avachinsky is one of the most active volcanoes on peninsula. Vapors, fumaroles, lava plug in the crater, full of crevasses, howling, sizzling – that’s what you will see. And finally, long and varied ski descent with the dropping of 2000 m. And of Couse amazing views to Avachinskaya valley, neighbor Zupanovskaya valley, volcanoes Zupanovsky which has been erupting for last two years, Dzenzur and Pacific ocean.

Answer: Requirements to participants as follows:
- Physical shape – good, i.e. continuous sport activity, not professional level.

- Climbing/technical level – no need, but very good if you have.

What conditions does igloo hotel provide?
Answer: as for the comfort our igloo is far from being an Eskimo dwelling! It is a range of separate snow lodgings with comfortable sleeping berths, interior features, lightening and other useful things.
The sleeping berth is a soft mattress covered by lambskin. The blanket is substituted by a sleeping unit that is two sleeping bags with a one-use bed sheet so that you can easily regulate your temperature individually and feel comfortable. Two sleeping units could be easily joined to create a twin bed for a couple. Even children and the most sensitive persons will feel warm. The system stands -30°C! The bar provides you hot and strong drinks, there is a fireplace in the relax zone, a hall, a warm dining room – kitchen (it’s not an igloo any more), a shower and a toilet. And, of course, there is a hot thermal water pool. All you have are stars, calm, mulled wine, hot pool, snow valleys, volcanoes and a high standard Santa Claus house! Such a fantastic beauty of the Kamchatka’s nature!
The outside temperature could reach -10 -20°C, whereas in the igloo it will always be about zero or so.

What are the accommodation conditions in the lodge of the Avachinsky pass?
Answer: 8-beds lodges situated as high as 1000 meters altitude above the sea are very comfortable, cozy and warm. There are soft two-tier beds, stove heating that we make working ourselves. The WC is outside and not heated. The lightening is provided in the evening and during the day, if needed.

Is it dangerous to ride on the volcano slopes?
Answer: Of course it is. It could not be 100% safe when you are in the mountains. AT is an activity where you could be injured, super cooled or so. To reduce the risks you should follow the guides’ instructions. It’s obligatory to have an avalanche course provided within the program and to respect the mountain security recommendations. Our guides that are professional rescuers and alpinists will give you lessons and share their experience in the mountain ride, they will teach you to choose the right route, to define the ascent and descent tactics. You will be provided with a course in alpinism "MT snow course, alpinism training". To resume, it’s dangerous but the danger is minimized, so that makes your travel very secure.

Are the avalanches possible?
Answer: Of course, they are, we are in the mountains. But if you follow our guide’s advises the risks could be minimized and their effects will be avoided. Besides, a compulsory avalanche course will be provided on the second day of your travel. All the travelers should have their avalanche transceivers, probes and shovels. If you don’t have those we could rent them out.

What is the expected weather and snow conditions?
Answer: 15.03–01.04: very high probability of powder snow. Quite cold, it could be till -15°C and windy.
01.04-10.04: Probability of powder snow, especially near the top of the mountain. At the bottom there is a hard-pack in the evening and moist snow by the midday (some spots of the south slope). It’s quite fresh, up to -10°C.
10.04-20.04: smaller probability of powder snow, the snow is harder. During the day the outside temperature in the lodges area could be above zero. You could sometimes bathe in the sun.
20.04-05.05: at the top of the slope the snow is moist in the afternoon but hard in the morning. There is wet snow in the afternoon at the bottom. The temperature on the slope is around zero, at the bottom – above zero. If it’s not windy it feels warm!
05.05-20.05: very warm at the bottom, the snow is slush and not freezing during the night. In the morning the snow is hard on the slope but it gets moist after the sunrise and slush in the afternoon. Very warm.
Keep in mind that it’s an average detail. The weather is very unstable and vary from one year to another.

How do we do the drop to the AT zone and on the slopes?
Answer: it is made in tow, i.e. you keep the rope attached to the snowmobile and it is pulling a skier/snowboarder. Simultaneously, the snowmobile could pull up to four persons. It’s not hard, it’s even interesting, but a good riding level is required. Those who are not proficient are transported on the snowmobile as a passenger, or in a sledge.

What kind of meal is offered during the trip?
Answer: all the meals are made with traditional tourist products for trips and expeditions (pasta, cereals, tinned stewed meat, tinned fish (sprats, sardines, sauries), condensed milk, local smoked sausage, salted salo (cured pork fat), bread, tea, sugar, cookies) and don’t include alcohol drinks, delicacies (red salmon, trout), red and black caviar, sea food, French cheese, Swiss chocolate, special space food rations (or alike). There will be three meals daily consisting of one main course. During long tours like climbing, dry rations will be provided for lunch.

Answer: Yes, there will be 220V sockets every day, but only in the evenings!

Answer: Yes, in the first half of the tour Megafon coverage is not bad (not advertisement), the other mobile operators’ connectivity is worse. In the second half of the tour all the operators (MTS, Megafon, Beeline, TELE2) provide quite good coverage, but only outdoors. Internet is quite slow in Kamchatka.

How communication will be provided in the mountains?
Answer: We offer VHF radio stations, 1 station for 2 persons. However, if you have your own station, we recommend you to take it with you.

What will we do in bad weather days?
Answer: In bad weather days we don’t make pelmeni or pancakes, but we always try to organize entertaining and useful activities like climbing training, "rescuing a friend from an avalanche"!
