The Kamchatka Peninsula extends 1300 km down from the easternmost part of Siberia.
A chain of hundreds of volcanoes runs its length, and the highest and most impressive group, Klyuchevskaya, lies 350 km north of its only city, Petropavlovsk, about 80 km inland from the Pacific coast. The area was opened to foreign climber and skiers in 1991 and there have been just a handful of foreign assents; the routes climbed so far have all been pioneered by Russian.
There is still much climbing and skiing to be done here.
